Already have questions?

What’s Methylation, and Why Take a Test?

Methylation is a vital process

in your body that helps turn the nutrients you eat into forms your body can actually use for things like energy, brain function, detox, and repairing cells.

Your genes help control how well your body performs methylation, which affects everything from cell repair to how your genes are turned on or off. Understanding your unique methylation pattern can help you support long-term health and aging.

Benefits of Testing

Discover if you have any genetic variants that affect how your body uses vitamins and nutrients in methylation.

MTHFR

Variants in MTHFR can affect folate metabolism, potentially leading to increased homocysteine levels (a risk factor for heart disease), neural tube defects, and other health issues.

MTR

Variants can affect vitamin B12 metabolism and homocysteine levels.

COMT

Variations can affect neurotransmitter balance, potentially influencing mood, stress response, and cognitive function.

PEMT

Variations can influence choline metabolism, which is essential for brain development, liver function, and muscle movement.

CBS

Variations can influence homocysteine levels and sulfur metabolism, potentially affecting cardiovascular health and liver function.

AHCY

Variations can affect methylation reactions, potentially influencing DNA repair, gene expression, and overall cellular function.

Common Questions

Methylation Function Test is a DNA test from US BioTek that looks at how your genes may affect a key biological process called methylation. Methylation influences detox, mood, hormone balance, energy, and more. This test helps identify whether your body may need extra support from specific nutrients like folate, B12, B6, choline, and magnesium.

Methylation is a chemical process that happens in your body billions of times per second. It helps regulate gene expression, detoxify toxins, support brain function, and create energy. It’s like your body’s biochemical switchboard.

The test looks at 15 key genes, including MTHFR, PEMT, CBS, MTR, TCN2, MTRR, COMT, and others—each of which influences your body’s methylation and detoxification pathways.

No. The Methylation Function Test is not a diagnostic test. It does not diagnose or predict any disease. Instead, it gives you insight into your nutrient needs and genetic tendencies, so you can make informed wellness choices.

The test uses a simple cheek swab you can collect at home—no blood draw required. Your sample is then sent to US BioTek’s certified lab for analysis.

No special preparation or fasting is needed. Just follow the instructions in the kit to collect your cheek swab correctly.

Results are typically available within 2–3 weeks after your sample reaches the lab. You’ll receive a detailed, easy-to-understand report with personalized recommendations. The total turn-around-time from order placement to delivery of results to the customer is 3- 4 weeks and depends on how quickly the saliva sample is returned to the lab.

Here is the step by step time line:

  1. Test payment
  2. Physician orders test
  3. 2-3 days post order US Biotek ships kit to consumer
  4. Consumer returns sample within 1 week of kit receipt
  5. Lab receives kit 2-4 days post kit shipment
  6. Test results are available 2 weeks post sample receipt

Currently, the Methylation Function Test is considered a wellness and nutrition-focused test and is typically not covered by insurance. However, it may be eligible for FSA/HSA reimbursement depending on your plan.

The Methylation Function Test is developed and owned by US BioTek Laboratories. CompareMedsRx does not manufacture, develop, or claim ownership of the Methylation Function Test. All intellectual property rights, clinical validation, and test-related data are the responsibility of US BioTek Laboratories. CompareMedsRx acts solely as a facilitator of access to this test and provides associated services such as genetic counseling, interpretation support and other relevant services. Any questions regarding the test’s methodology, accuracy, or results should be directed to US BioTek Laboratories. CompareMedsRx shall not be held liable for the performance, results, or outcomes of the Methylation Function Test.

This test is great for anyone looking to:

  • Understand their nutrient needs
  • Support mood, energy, or detoxification
  • Optimize their wellness through personalized nutrition
  • Address family history of inflammation, heart issues, or fatigue.
  • Explore root causes of symptoms like brain fog or sluggishness

You’ll learn if you have genetic variants that affect how your body uses certain vitamins and nutrients involved in methylation. You’ll also get personalized recommendations for diet, supplements, and lifestyle strategies.

Each gene result is assigned a priority level:

  • ✅ Low Priority – No major concerns; your body is likely processing nutrients normally in this area.
  • ⚠️ Medium Priority – There may be a slight need for extra nutritional support.
  • 🔴 High Priority – Your genetic variant may significantly affect methylation or detox, so targeted support may be helpful.

These are not medical risk levels, but rather guidance for where to focus nutrition and wellness attention.

When you order the bundle through CompareMedsRx you receive:
✅ The Methylation Function Test
✅ One session with a licensed genetic counselor to explain your results
✅ One session with a nutritionist to help you apply the insights to your daily life

This combination helps you turn results into a personalized action plan.

No. Your DNA stays the same for life. However, how your body expresses those genes can change based on your environment, nutrition, stress, and lifestyle choices. That’s why understanding your genetic baseline is so valuable.

Yes, and it may be especially useful. Methylation plays a role in fertility, pregnancy health, and fetal development. Folate, choline, B12, and B6 are essential during pregnancy, and this test can help identify if your needs may be higher.

Folate is the natural form of the vitamin found in foods. Folic acid is the synthetic form used in many supplements and fortified foods. Some people with MTHFR variants cannot process folic acid efficiently and may do better with methylated folate (5-MTHF).

Whole foods don’t contain 5-MTHF in its supplement form but do contain natural folate, which people without MTHFR variants can typically convert into 5-MTHF.

Best food sources of natural folate:

  • Dark leafy greens (spinach, kale, Swiss chard, romaine lettuce)
  • Asparagus
  • Avocados
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Broccoli
  • Lentils, black beans, pinto beans
  • Beets
  • Oranges and citrus fruits

⚠️ If you have an MTHFR variant, your body may not efficiently convert this food folate into 5-MTHF. That’s why supplemental L-methylfolate is often recommended.

Fortified Foods contain synthetic Folic Acid.

Examples: cereal, bread, energy bars

These typically contain folic acid, which may not be well-processed by people with MTHFR gene variants. These are not reliable sources of 5-MTHF for individuals with impaired methylation.

Dietary supplements are sources of methylated folate. These provide 5-MTHF in a highly bioavailable, ready-to-use form:

  • L-methylfolate (also labeled as Metafolin® or Quatrefolic®)
  • Common doses: 400 mcg – 1,000 mcg (sometimes higher under medical guidance)
  • Often found in:
    • Methylated B-complex formulas
    • Prenatal vitamins (premium brands)
    • MTHFR-targeted supplements

🧠 Note: Always check the label to make sure it says “L-methylfolate,” or “5-MTHF,”—not just "folic acid" or "folate."

Yes! The Methylation Function Test can help confirm whether the types and amounts of nutrients you're taking match your body’s actual needs based on your genes. It may also help you choose the right forms, such as methylated B vitamins.
